Grand
Challenges Canada announced the round of its “Stars in Global
Health” funding opportunities. This grant is targeted to
help researchers in health fields in developing countries to
develop their bold idea to improve global health
conditions.

The
application form is simple (2~3 pages) and is all online.
However, applicants should submit a 2-minute video on their
proposed research.

Grants
are initially valued at $100,000 CAD for up to 12-18 months to
demonstrate proof of concept of the idea. Successful applicants
have the opportunity to apply for scale up grants of $1 million
at the end of the project period.
Grand Challenges Canada is a Canadian Fund directed towards
overcoming health challenges in the developing world. They
support bold and simple ideas that have the potential of
improving the health of people in developing countries. They
fund the full spectrum of global health challenges including
drug discovery, medical devices and diagnostics, vaccine
development, health and medical education, maternal and child
health, non-communicable diseases (including mental health and
cancer), information communication technologies, health-related
water and sanitation, and agriculture.
Sample
projects they support include:

A
low-cost prosthetic knee that has the potential to be
mass-produced and distributed to amputees in the developing
world.
·
An
inexpensive water filter made from the modified protein
(keratin) in poultry feathers to remove arsenic from drinking
water in India.
·
A $1000
digital X-ray detector to cost-effectively, accurately and
rapidly detect tuberculosis (TB) in underserved populations.
